Autism and Health: Stepping out with the highlights from a recent event

Our monthly evening session explored how autistic adults can take charge of their health, from everyday habits to navigating the healthcare system. The focus was on practical, realistic approaches—no pressure, no judgment, just shared experiences and ideas.

Lawrence Curtis, creator of Healthy Minds Healthy Bodies, opened the event with an accessible introduction to nutrition. He explained how basic elements—carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen—are the foundation of life and why it matters what we put into our bodies. He discussed how different foods affect how we feel, both physically and mentally, and why awareness can be empowering.

We also learned about the “My Health Passport”—a tool that helps autistic people communicate their needs to healthcare providers. It’s designed to support understanding of sensory preferences, communication needs, and emotional well-being. Completed by you, the passport helps healthcare staff make reasonable adjustments and meet legal obligations like the Equality Act 2010.

Attendees shared honest reflections on food and health. Some talked about the challenge of cooking daily due to physical and mental health barriers, though batch cooking and freezing meals helps. Others spoke about the addictive nature of processed or takeaway food—how it can feel rewarding in the moment but often leads to regret or fatigue afterwards.

The session closed with open discussion and questions around how to make tools like the Health Passport more useful in real life. Participants suggested adding more personalisation and ensuring it’s recognised in all healthcare settings.

It was an honest, supportive conversation—and a reminder that looking after your health doesn’t have to mean perfection. I particularly enjoyed the evening sub-plot: the use of apps to see record daily steps and the most steps in a day!
