Autism and interviews – Tuesday 5 November 2024
ALAG and Autism Hub’s regular monthly evening event covered the daunting topic of job searches, job interviews and autism.
Two presentations provided varied insight on lived experience and practical tips. John Harrison’s personal experience reflected the common experiences of people with autism including the difficulties in settling into new jobs and finding suitable jobs. Jill Bradford offered practical tips on the interview process– preparation, the interview questions and expectations of interviews.
Audience responses revealed common themes: autistic people working in neurotypical working environments, difficulties with hierarchical structures and experiences of lengthy searches for work combined with managing job rejections.
Despite these difficulties, there was sharing of sound practical advice and useful takeaways.
- Remember that autism gives you strengths – an eye for detail, loyalty and the ability to focus. Look for jobs which use such skills and sell yourself using these.
- Don’t feel rushed during the actual interview itself. Ahead of time, if you want, ask for reasonable adjustments if appropriate for you.
- Consider a job trial where possible as based on contributions from attendees this may help increase the chance of getting in to successful employment.
This was a practical and well attended event. I enjoyed moderating the insightful contributions and highlighting the useful advice.Nick Stone, Autism Hub peer support facilitator & ALAG member, 6 November 2024
