Autistic people having special interests is common and often well known. Pursuing an interest in great depth provides calm, certainty and broadens knowledge. Regular readers will know that my own is public transport!
The recent ALAG event looked at creative special interests, and where those creative interests have nurtured a talent, helped fuel self expression and developed personal growth. We had two talented people who shared their creative skills – Travis Glover and Shaun Stamp.
Travis has been playing music for more than 17 years – playing keyboard for several big bands. His latest gaming remixes are being played by the Kris Nock Big Band as part of their concerts and upcoming tour. He impressed the audience with several keyboard tunes. He also spoke about the impact of music as a therapy for speech.
Shaun showed and talked through his innovative range of artwork – all original and inspiring. Among his achievements has been exhibiting internationally in places such as the Turner Contemporary Museum (UK), Kunst Museum Wolfsburg (Germany), WCCE Dubai Expo (UAE), Anderson Ranch Arts Center.
How being autistic initiated and influenced creative practices was highlighted throughout the session. We also discussed the skills and challenges needed to convert this creativity into commissions and commercial success.
Overall, what came across throughout was the enthusiasm for creativity. This was an evening of creativity, talent and inspiration in equal measure.
