Autism and Pride: Creating Accessible Spaces for Everyone

This month’s online event for autistic adults explored the theme of Autism and Pride, bringing together practical advice, lived experience, and discussion about accessibility at Pride events.

Our guest speaker, Sofie Day, Deputy Access and Quiet Pride Lead Volunteer at Pride in London, shared insights from more than 25 years of lived experience as an autistic professional. Sofie discussed the importance of moving beyond awareness towards genuine inclusion, creating environments where neurodivergent people can participate fully and feel a sense of belonging.

The session highlighted the role of accessibility in making Pride events welcoming to all. Attendees learned about Pride in London’s Quiet Pride initiatives, as well as practical tools such as the Access Card, which can help people access adjustments and support at events. The group also discussed preparing for large events, including transport planning, what to bring, and personal safety considerations.

Audience members shared their own experiences of sensory overload at busy Pride events and reflected on what makes a genuinely calm and accessible space. Suggestions included avoiding strobe lighting, loud bangs, pyrotechnics, and other sudden sensory stimuli.

The discussion also touched on accessibility tools such as RADAR keys, Sunflower lanyards, and autism identification cards, highlighting the range of support available to help neurodivergent people navigate public spaces with greater confidence.

The evening provided a valuable opportunity to explore how Pride can become more inclusive, ensuring that autistic and other neurodivergent people can celebrate identity, community, and belonging in ways that work for them.
