Reflections on our recent event
Our regular monthly ALAG–Autism Hub event took place in person on Tuesday 6 October, exploring how autistic people can navigate social situations during the festive season.
Facilitated by Speech and Language Therapist Wendy Tuson, the workshop looked at some of the additional challenges that can come with changes to routines, social expectations and the pressure to join in with festive activities.
We explored practical strategies for responding to invitations, including deciding whether to accept or decline, communicating before an event, and clarifying roles and expectations.
During events, we discussed navigating small talk, managing sensory and social overload, maintaining boundaries and recognising when it is appropriate to leave.
There was also discussion around expectations such as gift-giving, “forced jollity” and the assumption that particular routines are socially acceptable.
The key message was that there is no single right way to socialise. Understanding our own needs and having strategies to communicate boundaries can help us make choices that allow us to participate in ways that work for us.
