October’s regularly monthly ALAG / Autism hub meeting was different. This was a chance for audience members to ask question from three corporate representatives. Each of the three representatives talked about employment opportunities for neurodivergent people. The Take-Two gaming company; Google and Mastercard all offering opportunties for people with autism, with technology being a common theme.
Questions from the audience of 50 were insightful. Commons themes were wording CVs, skills and experience. Overall this was a positive evening with an emphasis career development for people with autism – in the broader context of diversity and workplace opportunities.
An interest range of opinions emerged on maximising existing personal connections compared with entry into a new workplace based on merit. For me another interesting question was the abilities or skills that employers might spot in a potential recruit, which they could not spot themselves.
There were two take away points summed up the evening:
- Just be yourself
- Focus on the one thing that you are good at.
